Photo wallet birthday card

For this special birthday photo wallet I went “Bigger”! I used two bright pink 8,5×6 inch (22×15,5 cm) envelopes and two pieces of cardstock to match. I decorated it with Uptown Flair design paper, which is a lovely, sparkly summer paper that I’ve totally fallen in love with!

Creating such a large photo wallet comes with the advantage that the recipient can use a lot of photo’s without having to cut each and every one of them to size!

Anyway, see for yourself and let me know what you think!

Cute summer booklet

Here’s a cute little booklet of my own design, in the bright summer colours of Uptown Flair design paper by The Paper Studio.
Useable as a gift card holder, or simply as a card holder just like I’m doing here, just using the entire thing as a birthday card.

No distressing this time, just a few embellishments without overdoing it.

Paper walkthrough: Uptown Flair – The Paper Studio

I’ve fallen in love with the bright spring & summer colors of this 12×12 inch (30×30 cm) design paper. Its patterns remind me of the seventies, giving it a “retro” feel despite its bright-colored contrasts. And almost every sheet turned out to have glitter sprinkled all over it – how I love that!

Can’t wait to use it in scrapping projects (what else is new 😉 ).

Explosion box with “Fiddlesticks” design paper

I really love this western-like jeans, lace & wood design paper by My Mind’s Eye. This 6×6 inch (15×15 cm) paper shows fascinating combinations of colors, fabrics and textures and also comes with two sheets of tags. Check out my paper walkthrough to see what I mean; I loved working with it!

This is my first explosion box. The most difficult challenge was probably “how not to use the entire paper pad in one explosion box” – but I managed 😉

An explosion box is a lot of work but its rewards are as great: it really makes its recipients happy, their eyes widening with wonder and glee when they lift its lid! :-)The one I made here is probably its most simple form; I’m already contemplating more layers, more pockets, more doors, more… everything! So keep an eye out for my next design! 🙂

Een explosiedoosje is veel werk, maar het is ook wel superleuk om aan iemand te geven door de verrassing die het doosje in zich bergt, en die tevoorschijn “springt” als de nieuwsgierige ontvanger het dekseltje optilt 🙂

Paper walkthrough: K&Company’s “Olive Tree”

Today I’d like to show you Olive Tree by K&Company, a 12×12 inch (30×30 cm) design paper stack in beautiful “woody” colors. Mostly brown and beige, with green and red accents. Probably not for everyone, but if you’re in the market for something different and sophisticated, this might be just the stack for you!

Photo editing: the effect of a different, digital background

Sometimes the objects in our pictures look good, but yet there seems to be missing something. Something that would make this photo really stand out, showcasing its object with flair. If you encounter such a picture in your camera roll, have you ever considered changing the background, and exchanging it for something different altogether?

For instance, here’s a picture of our choir with a fun enhanced background:

Below is the original: it was taken under less than ideal lighting conditions due to our low-lit practice room and a “snap-shot camera”. The room itself had nothing but dark colors and had little else to catch one’s attention in a favorable way. And yet, at the moment it was the only photo we had with all of us present. So, I changed our background to liven it up a bit. Here’s another variation with a digital background:

Of course you don’t have to use abstract digital art – a nice landscape will do just as well! 🙂

These changes don’t make it a beautiful picture all of a sudden – but, it does add at least some “pizzazz”…

Another example. I love photographing my cute little long-haired guinea pigs. They make for ideal top models by the way: they hardly move once they notice that thing you keep pointing at them (what could it be?!) and they even let you change small things in their poses, like lifting their chins a little bit, or stretching their legs just so. 🙂

Take Sh’eilah for instance. I took a picture of her which is lovely in and of itself – mostly because she is lovely no matter how or where you take her picture ;-).

Anyway, the background was a bit dull, so I removed it all together – or rather, I cut Sh’eilah from her original background and pasted her onto a green digital abstract. This makes the pic rather more flamboyant – and its object a true Top Model, imho.

When I want to copy the object in one photo and paste it into the next (always create a new layer!), I make sure my selection tool “leaves some room” between the selection I drew – this way I create kind of a “blurry” selection line, which makes it way more easy to blend the object in with its new background.

And last but not least, you can combine digital photo editing with scrapbooking or making cards, by making sure you choose photo backgrounds that will match with the color scheme of your design paper stack. Like I did with the pictures for my Tag card in Red. I already showed you the example below in that post; if you want to see how the rest of the pictures turned out, go check out that blog post (of deze in het Nederlands) and watch the video!

By the way, I’m using Paintshop Pro XI for these kind of edits.

Paper walkthrough: “Fiddlesticks” by My Mind’s Eye

Sometimes it’s the little things that can make us happy! 🙂

Take this cute little 6×6 inch (15×15 cm) paper pad here, called Fiddlesticks – the title alone brings to mind (well, to my mind at least) some old western with girls in frocks dancing to the fiddly tunes played by some old cowboys. And the papers themselves make it very clear: these cowboys & gals are wearing jeans!

Or something like that. 😉

Anyway, enjoy another one of my Paper Walkthroughs!

Flora and Fauna Photo wallet / gift card

A couple of weeks ago I found a nice little Youtube tutorial for a photo wallet made of only one piece of doublesided 12×12 inch paper (30×30 cm). So I chose a beautiful, stylish piece of design paper by K&Company, Flora and Fauna, and got to work.

Keeping a bit low profile with the embellishments, I tried to make the wallet as flat as possible. Assuming the person who receives it might want to keep her business cards nicely together in her handbag, any 3D embellisments or bling would run the risk of coming off and getting lost in said handbag. So I kept it nice, flat and simple and just used some ribbon and a border punch.

Here’s the minimalist yet still very feminine end result!

Prima Romance Novel Altered Treasure Chest, pt. 2 – Completed

Here’s the little treasure chest again (see part 1), the one I altered with paper from Prima, the Romance Novel 6×6 inch (15×15 cm) design paper pad.

The mini tags were an extra challenge, in that I wanted to print text on them instead of writing them by hand. How do you print text on teeny-tiny labels and tags? I can’t say everything went perfect from the start, can’t say there were no misprints either, but: in the end I was able to come up with some pretty awesome mini prints on some pretty tiny mini tags! 🙂 And if you’d like to learn how to do this as well, check out my free tutorial!

Of course there’s a video below, but first a quick reminder of what I started with: “Before”

And here’s “After”:

I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out, and I really like how it matches my colonial wooden cabinet so perfectly… Plus, I’m especially pleased with how the quilled dandelion turned out – thanks to a tutorial by Inna from Inna’s Creations.

As I mentioned in part 1, I made this box on commission for someone who is going to send it to his lady friend who lives far far away, across many oceans and seas. Of course I sincerely hope that the intended recipient, “R”, really loves this little treasure chest her friend commissioned for her!

So, on to the video! The first one is in English, the second in Dutch.

Paper walkthrough: Gemstones 6×6 inch paper pad

This is a nice little color paper pad. Twenty sheets for twenty colors, each sheet with a nice canvas texture and a metalic – actually “pearlescent”, or so the cover says – sheen on one side, and the same color without these “extras” on the backside. No intricate designs, no nifty patterns – thus becoming the perfect match for pretty much every other paper stack in existence! 🙂

Prima Romance Novel altered treasure chest, pt. 1 – Preview / Work in progress

I’m working on a commissioned altered box at the moment, and I thought it would be fun to share some of the progress.

The person I’m making this for wants to send an altered box to his dear friend in New Zealand (yea, I’m being shipped overseas, woohoo! :-)). He has sent me some short notes he wants to be written on the box and furthermore he’s asked me to do something with a dandelion, or a dandelion theme, as this flower has special meaning to him and his friend.

Here’s what I came up with so far:

  1. I’m going to use the Romance Novel design paper stack, I don’t think there’s a paper out there that’s more fitting! It has everything you could want for a commission like this: it’s gorgeous, it’s romantic AND it has a love letter theme, including vintage postage stamps and the like! How cool is that for a gift that will actually be sent overseas by mail!
  2. I decided I wanted to find a way to create an actual paper dandelion, 3D, life size. Didn’t have a clue how to do it, but I was going to find out and make it work!

So, here’s some pics of the work in progress, enjoy!

The wooden box I’m altering. It’s kind of a mini treasure chest and it’s about 3.5×2.5×2.5 inches (9x6x6 cm). Isn’t it adorable?

First I removed its lock and the hinges on the back. Then I painted it dark brown except its little legs which I painted gold, using simple acryllic paint. I mixed it with a pearl paint to create a pearly shine. Then I sprayed glimmer mist on the whole thing, using Tattered Angel’s Iridescent Gold and Vanilla Breeze. Nothing too fancy, but it does create a very nice, subtle effect. Plus, this box has Golden Feet! 🙂

Here’s the layout for the box. I sprayed each piece of paper with a bit of glimmer mist, using the same two colors I used on the box. Of course I’m going to distress everything as well, for which I’ll be using Tim Holtz’s Black Soot distress ink.

On to the creation of the dandelion. Fortunately the internet was there to teach me how to make one (check out Inna’s Creations, a very creative Israeli lady whose website I stumbled onto. She makes gorgeous paper art!). I started by creating the paper strip on this picture.

Roll up tight!

And spread the little petals. Done – A cute little life-sized paper dandelion! Thank you Inna! 🙂

I’m going to put this inside the box, so that when my friend’s friend opens it, a lovely, bright piece of summer will smile at her 🙂

So, this was part 1 – hope you enjoyed it!

I’ll be showing you the finished product in part 2. Until then, stay creative!

Paper walkthrough: Romance Novel by Prima

Ah, this gorgeous gorgeous design stack is such a delight that I’m hesitant to even use it! Perhaps I’ll simply stare at it for a couple of minutes a day…

Edit April 10th, 2013: As it turns out, this design stack is also available in A4 size. I don’t think it’ll come as a very big surprise that I immediately bought that too as soon as I heard of its existence… 😉
