Low budget tip: Working your scraps into a fun project!

So, what to do with all of these leftovers from your papercraft projects? Design paper scraps, cardstock scraps and even chipboard scraps – do you throw them all out? That could work, clutterfree living is a ‘thing’ nowadays after all.

However, you can also choose the Frugal Crafter’s perspective: when I consider my scraps, I don’t see waste, I see paper real estate! That’s why this week’s post is about a practical way to work with several different kinds of leftovers and create a very fun project with them. And it will be very budget-friendly indeed 🙂

Also, it’s a new video tutorial on how to create my so-called scrap mats. I have done one before but that was many many moons ago, so I thought it time for a fresh one…

Craft Until the Last Scrap!

I’ve heard some scrapbookers say that they immediately throw out their leftovers once a project is finished, no matter how much paper real estate they would still be able to get out of it. I’m not one of them! 🙂  On the contrary, I challenge myself to have as little leftovers as possible in the end, so I keep creating until there’s only some last feeble imitation of a heap of little scraps left.

This card is one of such projects, created with the last remnants of my Be-You-Tiful papers, of which I only had a few sheets to begin with.

Colorful Summer Birthday Card

Today I’m sharing a short video with you of a card I decorated mainly with leftover scraps. I always find it amazing how much design paper real estate you can still pull from your scraps, and I always enjoy sharing my inspiration with you all to not throw away your scraps too easily 😉

This time I used the leftovers from my Springtime Dreams keepsake album, created with papers by Webster’s Pages, using their collection called Nest. The larger flowers are by Prima Marketing.

A lovely gatefold pocket card

This cute little gatefold pocket card went straight into the altered gift box I showed you in my previous blog post. I designed it myself, using Graphic 45’s gorgeously colorful Bohemian Bazaar design paper, on hot blue cardstock. You’ll also see some of my scrap mats again, in fact, this card is the end result of the project I was actually working on in my scrap mat tutorial, so check it out!

Thanks to its multiple pockets, this gatefold card will also serve great as a gift card holder as well.

Note on video quality: Most of my videos are 720p; the rest is 540p. If you don’t get one of these resolutions while viewing the video on this blog but instead have to make due with some rather unsharp videos, you should be able to adjust video quality by clicking the gear icon in the bottom right corner of the video player, and selecting your preferred quality. If you don’t have the gear icon, then click the Youtube sign, also in the bottom right corner of the video player. This will take you directly to Youtube, where you’ll be able to change the video quality with the gear icon after all. Hope this helps.

A Christmas micro album

A short while ago I created a Christmas mini album, using Kaisercraft’s ‘Tis the Season paper pad. Of course I had some scraps left over and I put them to good use, creating another one of my micro albums. And it’s turned out very cute – especially when you see it next to its ‘big sister’! 🙂

Of course there are a lot of my scrap mats in this little micro, and you can check out my tutorial on those if you want to try your hand at them as well.

How to create a scrap mat – a tutorial

Here’s a little tutorial on how I make so-called ‘scrap mats’. This is what I call the photo mats that I create from leftover scraps of design paper.

You see the thing is, I just like to use up as much of my design paper as I can – I guess it’s a combination of enjoying as much of a particular paper stack as possible on the one hand, and frugality on the other. I mean, you’d be surprised how much photo mat real-estate the right combination of scraps generates! (What can I say, I’m just weird that way 😉 )
