Dabbling in Backgrounds

Sometimes one has to go and broaden one’s horizons. So, I decided to not only watch all of the Tim Holtz demos on his blog, sitting on my couch consuming content (and pork rind chips 🙂 ) but to treat them as an actual course. He has shared many hours of demo videos since the corona lockdown and I treated myself to them all, taking notes in a notebook – I even dug out my fountain pen for that 🙂 . Being locked down at least supplied me with those hours so I decided to take advantage of that…

And so I started to practice and play around with all of the mixed media art supplies I had collected the last couple of years, but simply hadn’t come round to using. And of course I added to said stash with a lot of new stuff too, but hey, we’re not just crafters, we’re also collectors right 😉😎

Anyway, I thought it might be nice to share my first batch of mixed media backgrounds. I mean, I have done some inking & stencilling when creating photo tags for my envelope folios, but not in all of these different ways. This blog post will share the whole batch, and also the card I created from one of those backgrounds. The coming days and weeks I’ll post each individual (set of) background(s) in a separate blog post, with pictures and descriptions on how I created them. And after those, there will be more!

Hope you’ll enjoy this new series of experiments, that will be added to (but not replacing) my other work. Who knows where this will end – there may even be an art journaller hidden somewhere inside me yet…🙃🤨

Mailable Photo Stand with Dapper

Leftover pieces of chipboard are ideal to create all kinds of nice trinkets and keepsakes. Like, for example, a mailable photo stand. I created this one for my mom, with some nice memories of my dad. So I again used Tim Holtz’s masculine-themed Dapper collection, printed and cropped four pictures and decorated to my heart’s desire.

As for the paper, I used 10 ATC cards, so this project is also perfect for your leftover Project Life cards or journalling cards!

Grungy Card with Tim Holtz’s Dapper

Grungy card with Tim Holtz's Dapper collection (front)

Hi everyone,

This week I’m sharing my enthusiasm about Tim Holtz’s 2016 Dapper paper pad. As per usual when I really like a paper collection, I leave it in my stash for quite some time before I can bring myself to cut into it; hence the 2.5 year (!) delay between it being offered on the market and me actually creating something with it…

Anyway, I chose to use one of Dapper’s 6×6″ sheets, plus a 3×4″ sheet. They all come in one big double-sided 12×12″ pad – which I find a brilliantly creative invention – a characteristic shared by all Tim Holtz’s paper pads alike.

The double card I created is about 6×6″, and I grunged everything up by actually distressing all of the papers’ edges, using no inks whatsoever, to enhance the effect. Also, I added in some layering and of course embellishments – and there you go, a card with a distinct masculine feel!

Pre-made Collection Folio Idea

Happy New Year everyone! 🙂
And let’s start off with a new craft idea, why don’t we 🙂

So I bought what I’m calling a collection folio, a sturdy folio to keep your paper documents neatly ordered around the office and at home. I altered it a bit, that is to say I expanded on it, decorated it and then filled it up with two handmade folios of my own.

I used the beautiful Madeleine paper collection by Bo Bunny plus several of its decorative elements.

Hope you like this idea, it was pretty fun to work on it! As for the other two folios, next week’s post will focus more on them, plus I’m now offering a tutorial set for them.

Trail Mix Tag Card – for Her, or for Him

Some paper collections are gender neutral – or rather, as I’d like to call it, gender encompassing 🙂 : fitting for both men and women, boys and girls. Certain themes will fit almost any occasion and any person, and nature would be one of those categories.

Bo Bunny’s Trail Mix is a fun design paper collection centered around the great outdoors. It has lots of wood, birds, flowers, trees and the coordinating Notepack die-cuts even offer wild animals! Trail Mix fits both male and female recipients of almost all ages and I have used it as such. The first project for which I used this paper was a little mini album for a ten-year-old boy. This tag card was created for a middle-aged (but young at heart 🙂 ) woman.

Tag Card – show & tell with pictures

The front of the card shows a pocket with a punched border. It’s been matted, with a label from Bo Bunny’s Trail Mix Notepack die-cuts on top of that. The top corners of the card have been rounded with the Deco/Stub Corner Chomper by We R Memory Keepers.

The pocket holds a tag – which itself is a die-cut from the Trail Mix Notepack. The card itself has been matted with two pieces of decorative paper, for some added interest and color.

I printed the name of the recipient onto the tag. I added some details, by applying droplets of diamond glitter glue to the flowers on the tag. On the back of the tag I wrote my personal message to her.

The label on the pocket is lifted with some dimensional tape. I stamped the label “Speciaal voor jou” – which is Dutch for “Especially for you.”

Because my personal note was written on the back of the tag in the front pocket, I could mat the back of the card with some nice design paper from the collection.

I emphasized a ldetail in the pattern by tracing it with some Glossy Accents: a little bird, sitting on a tree branch.

WonderFall – a 42-Layout Cinch Mini!

Remember the little autumn-themed ultra mini album I showed you a couple of blog posts ago? I had created it with the leftover scraps of a larger, regular-sized mini album that I was working on. Well, I’ve finished that one and I’m very happy to share the results! 🙂

This 6×6 mini album is Cinch-bound, it has TEN page assemblies with 42 (!) photo layouts, a lot of diecuts by me, plus a lot of extra embellishments. The page construction was very very simple, so I’ve incorporated a short page tutorial as well.

The paper collection I used is Autumn Song by Bo Bunny – of which I totally forgot to film a walkthrough before I started the project, but there’s a link to Amazon below should you be interested in this collection, which is absolutely gorgeous and perfect for this time of year!

This mini album is all about Shalem, my French lop who passed away two years ago. So I decorated the front cover of the album with a picture of him, but before I had the photo printed, I did some digital editing first! I cut Shalem from his original background (the grass in my garden) and then pasted him into a fantasy fall landscape that I found on the internet somewhere. In the lower right corner I digitally wrote his name and dates of birth/death. So before we go to the video, here’s a close-up of the album’s front cover:

Quick scrap: Butterfly tag card

One of the interesting thing about tags is that you don’t have to use them as tags necessarily. I’ve seen people make mini tag albums with them, hang them from Christmas trees, use them as photo mats.

And here’s yet another use: they also make great birthday cards – you can in fact make one in less than an hour, which would make it a quick scrap project in my book! 🙂

Materials used: cardstock, design paper (Bo Bunny’s Country Garden), Tim Holtz On the Edge dies (Butterflight and Plaque & Postage), embossing folder, embellishments, Tim Holtz distress ink (Frayed Burlap).

Treasured Memory Keepsake Album DeLuxe

This is probably the largest (or rather bulkiest) and most complex mini album I’ve created so far. My mother asked me to create a beautiful keepsake album in memory of my father, so you can imagine I went all out on this one.

She chose one of the paper lines in my stash, the gorgeous and very fittingly vintage romantic Stationer’s Desk by Prima Marketing.

The show & tell video has turned out rather long, approx. half an hour, so I decided to do a second version, a Fast Forward Edition so to speak, for those of you who just want a quick overview. You find both videos below plus lots of pictures, so take your pick or enjoy both of them 😉

Boxed summer album: Enjoy Each Moment

Inspired by one of the many creative people on Youtube, I took it upon me to create a very special kind of keepsake album: the boxed mini album. The cover of this new category of minis will turn it into a box every time you close the album! Cool.

Not having bought the tutorial, the only design clues I had were the show & tell video by the lady that inspired this album. So naturally there will be several differences between her and my design. Plus, I added some deliberate changes as well: the way the cover opens, the use of book muslin. Well, just watch the video and you’ll see what I mean 😉

Oh, and I did some photo editing as well, for I adapted the first and the last photos’ backgrounds to better fit the design paper – so there’s a little bonus idea. 🙂

Super-sized birthday card

Having done several mini and micro cards & booklets, I figured it was time to go in another direction and create a super-sized card! 🙂 It’s a Happy Birthday card, created with DCWV’s Serenity paper and measuring 17×25 cm (approx. 7×10 inches). It has three pockets, which hold two photo mats plus an “actual” birthday card – from a local store. Of course I used my scrap mat technique as well, on the front pocket.

A Christmas micro album

A short while ago I created a Christmas mini album, using Kaisercraft’s ‘Tis the Season paper pad. Of course I had some scraps left over and I put them to good use, creating another one of my micro albums. And it’s turned out very cute – especially when you see it next to its ‘big sister’! 🙂

Of course there are a lot of my scrap mats in this little micro, and you can check out my tutorial on those if you want to try your hand at them as well.

My first Christmas mini album

This past year has been my first “full” year of paper crafting: it all started with the calendar I created for my mother back in November 2012, which seriously infected me with the “paper crafting virus” 🙂 . It has been a year of wonderful creativity and I’m very grateful for the many new techniques (new to me, at least…) I’ve been able to learn. Looking forward to 2014, I’m hoping to plan my craft projects more around the different seasons: not just taking into account the uniquely different feel of winter-spring-summer-autumn, but also bringing some of the holiday seasons into the mix. Not with every single project of course, I mean, sometimes you just want to use a certain design paper because it’s simply too gorgeous not to 🙂 – but generally speaking I feel it should be doable.

So, starting right now, at the end of 2013, I’m very happy to present you all with my very first Christmas mini album!

I used the Tis the Season paper collection by Kaisercraft and inked around all the edges with Vintage Photo distress ink by Tim Holtz. I’ve also incorporated some so-called scrap mats again, a technique I actually came up with (and named) myself. If you want to know how to make them, feel free to check out my tutorial!
